How to Help Yourself according to Samuel Smiles

Samuel Smiles book called Self-Help gives the principles of how to achieve things and many examples of how these were put into action in the lives of those who achieved great things at the end of the 18th and first part of the 19th centuries. This course looks at principles of how to achieve greatness that were used by many Victorians.

In Darkest England and the Way Out

William Booth’s book In Darkest England and the Way Out was published in 1890. It is an extensive project plan for relieving poverty in the UK that has never been completely put into practice. Some parts have been tried with varying degrees of success. There are ideas and principles in this book that could be helpful to modern social action projects.

Other ideas

There are also some materials and notes to create further courses. These include:

• research materials on household security that came from various neighbourhood watch type web sites that were originally intended to become a follow on course to the Surviving a Household Emergency
• research materials from y2k which look at a higher level of preparedness than suggested in Surviving a Household Emergency
• an outline for a course to help people choose the right prayer strategy to resolve mental health problems e.g. break inner vows
• notes on limitations i.e. what stops people doing what they could be doing
